The Victor Polish Open concluded in Bierun this afternoon with five different countries tasting success. Young Irish pair Paul Reynolds and Nhat Nguyen lifted their first senior title as a pair in the men’s doubles while England’s Victoria Williams claimed a gold and a silver with victory in the women’s doubles and runners up spot in the mixed.

Nguyen had impresses in the men’s singles last week in Belgium on his run to the semi final and this week the 17 year old displayed his versatility lifting the men’s doubles title with Reynolds. After coming through a tricky second round against Danes Baskjaer & Stoffersen the Irish knew they definitely had a shot at the title.

“We were quietly confident coming into the tournament this week and knew if we could get by the second round we were in with a chance of winning” said Reynolds.

The Irish eased into the final but were underdogs against the experienced German pair of Heinz and Benz. The Irish took a very tight opening game 21-19 and the second set proved to be as close as the first.

The Irish finally claimed the match at the fifth time of asking landing their first senior title after their run to European U17 bronze two years ago which incidentally was also on Polish soil in Lubin.

“Towards the end it was very nervy” explained Reynolds “We squandered a few match points but always stayed composed. It was a big relief to finally close out the match in two games. We have put a lot of hard work into this victory and we will now push on and aim for bigger things”.

In the women’s doubles Moore and Williams continued their good circuit form taking the title beating Maneesha and Sunil in two tight games. The win was a relief for Williams in particular after the English woman lost the opening mixed doubles final where Danes Knudsen and Nielsen came out on top.

Ayla Huser of Switzerland lifted the women’s singles title beating Jordan Hart of Wales in another closely contested two set final. “No words needed, Winner of the Polish International” were the words of Huser via her official Facebook page alongside an image of her kissing the substantial winner’s trophy in Poland.

In the all Malaysian men’s singles final Lee Zii Jia overcame Joo Ven Soong to round off another immaculately run Polish International.
