Cuba’s Osleni Guerrero won his third men’s singles title at the Pan Am Championships, beating Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon in Aguascaientes, Mexico, yesterday.

Guerrero, champion in 2013 and 2014, beat Cordon – also a former two-time champion – 21-11 22-20.

Guerrero was the only non-Canadian winner on the day as the Pan Am powerhouses captured the other four titles.

Job Castillo upset top seed Ygor Coelho.

The big surprise of the tournament was the quarterfinal defeat of Brazil’s Ygor Coelho, who was looking for a hat-trick of titles. Coelho was beaten by home hope Job Castillo, 23-21 18-21 21-15.

Castillo in turn fell to Cordon, while in the other semifinal, Guerrero prevailed over Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue in three games.

Michelle Li expectedly won the women’s singles for her fourth title overall; Li beat compatriot Brittney Tam 21-15 24-22.

Guerrero was in line for a double as he and compatriot Leodannis Martinez Palacio made the men’s doubles final against Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura. However, the Canadians got the better of them 21-11 20-22 21-10.

Rachel Honderich (right) and Kristen Tsai won the women’s doubles.

The women’s doubles title went to Rachel Honderich/Kristen Tsai who outplayed compatriots Catherine Choi/Josephine Wu 21-15 27-25.

Josephine Wu earlier won the mixed doubles with Joshua Hurlburt-Yu; the Canadians beat Brazil’s Fabricio Farias/Jaqueline Lima 21-14 21-19.
