Jeppe Bay/ Sara Lundgaard embrace underdog status to win title
Whilst playing top seeds Niclas Nohr/ Amalie Magelund, third seeds Jeppe Bay/ Sara Lundgaard said they will embrace being the underdog in the final and give their opponents a surprise. That they certainly did.
Looking very comfortable on court, Bay/ Lundgaard, the Austrian Open 2020 champions, took the opening game 21-15. In contrast, their opponent were not allowed to find their game and the momentum was carried into the second game, sealing the title with an impressive scoreline of 21-15, 21-14.
-We are very pleased with our performance. I think it is a bit over our expectations with the way we won. We felt pretty secure all the way through and I think we played the maximum we could, so we are really pleased, said Bay.
-Sometimes it’s easier to play more relaxed when you are the underdogs, so that’s why we played like that today, Lundgaard added.
With a good lead in the second game, Nohr/ Magelund began to close the gap, however, Bay/ Lundgaard knew what they had to do.
-We were focused on keeping our game plan and focusing on how we were playing up to 15. They got to 15-13 at some point but we talked together and said we needed to focus on the good things we have been doing the entire game. It worked out in the end so that was really nice, Bay explained.
-It’s very nice to begin this season with a win. We hope to keep on doing that, Lundgaard said with a smile.
